New Grand Designs New Zealand host Tom Webster never planned to build himself a career in television.
The British-born architect says he was approached by the series producers to take over from Wellington architect Chris Moller who quit the show in 2021 after six seasons.
“It wasn’t something I’d looked to do in my life, but it was a great opportunity,” Webster says, adding he grew up watching the Kevin McCloud-hosted British Grand Designs that has notched up 22 seasons since launching in 1999.
With Grand Designs New Zealand’s seventh season – and his first – set to debut on TVNZ 1 this week, Webster admits he is a little apprehensive about taking over from the popular Moller.
“But I have a great ability to just focus on what I’m doing and not worry too much about the rest of it.
“But, yeah, sometimes there’s a little pause for thought, kind of, ‘Am I going to do as good a job as him?’ Who knows? I think I will just be myself and, hopefully, people will like me.”
